How to Practice Bike Safety

With summer in full swing, Vaughan’s streets and trails are buzzing with bike riders. Biking is a fantastic way to get around our beautiful city, but remember, safety comes first! Here are some essential tips to keep you safe while you enjoy the ride:

Before You Ride:

  • Inspect Your Bike: Check that your tires, helmet, lights, and other equipment are in top condition.
  • Dress for the Weather: Wear layers and be prepared for changing conditions, whether it’s sunny, rainy, or windy.
  • Avoid Puddles: Puddles can hide hazards like potholes, gravel, or sand.

On the Road:

  • Follow the Rules: Keep to the right, use hand signals, obey traffic lights and stop signs, and let pedestrians know you’re approaching with a bell or horn.

Safety Gear:

  • Helmets: Riders under 18 must wear helmets, but everyone, regardless of age, should wear one for safety.
  • Required Equipment: Your bike should have white reflective tape on the front forks, red reflective tape on the rear forks, a white front light, a red rear light or reflector, and a working bell or horn.

Remember, bicycles are considered vehicles under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. Riders have the same rights and responsibilities as other road users.

E-Bikes, E-Scooters, and Other Micromobility Devices

E-Bikes: These power-assisted bicycles come with handlebars, working pedals, two or three wheels, an electric motor, and a braking system. They can operate on roads like regular bicycles if they meet certain requirements set by the Ministry of Transportation.

E-Scooters: These motorized vehicles have two wheels, brakes, a platform to stand on, handlebars, front and rear lights, a bell or horn, and reflective material. They can operate on bike lanes, cycle tracks, in-boulevard multi-use paths, and local roads with speed limits of 50 km/h or less.

Important Note: Both e-bikes and e-scooters are not allowed on sidewalks. For more details on provincial requirements and where they can operate, visit vaughan.ca/micromobility.

Vaughan’s Cycling and Trail Network

Our community boasts a large network of cycling facilities, including:

  • In-Boulevard Cycle Tracks: Separate spaces for bikes, e-bikes, or e-scooters, marked with arrows, bicycle symbols, and diamonds.
  • On-Road Bike Lanes: Designated lanes for bikes, e-bikes, or e-scooters, separated from motor vehicle lanes by a white line.
  • In-Boulevard Multi-Use Pathways: Shared spaces for walking, biking, e-bikes, or e-scooters, separate from driving lanes by a curb and buffer.
  • Multi-Use Recreational Trails: Shared spaces for walking and biking within parks and open spaces. Motorized micromobility devices are not allowed on these trails.
