At This Stage… Renovating Isn’t Just About the Kitchen
I’ve decided to start sharing these reflections publicly because I have a feeling many of us are thinking about the same things — just not always saying them out loud.
This note may resonate more depending on where you are in your life right now. For some, these are conversations happening today. For others, they’re a few years away.
And for many… they’re already starting.
Last week I shared that I’ve been thinking a lot about flexibility.
That conversation hasn’t gone away.
If anything, it’s gotten louder.
Because once you start talking about renovating, you realize something:
It’s not really about the kitchen.
When we renovate in a meaningful way — not paint and light fixtures, but real money — we’re making a decision.
We’re saying:
We’re staying. We’re committing. We’re building into this chapter.
That’s bigger than tile.
The house can still be good. The neighbourhood still familiar. The memories still real.
But life shifts.
Kids are older. Parents need support. Travel feels more important. Energy feels different.
So the question becomes:
If I invest significantly here… what am I choosing not to invest in?
Because money is only part of it. So is time. So is attention. So is the mental space that a major renovation takes up for months — sometimes years.
Renovating can absolutely make sense. I’m not saying it doesn’t.
But renovating because it feels easier than making a bigger decision?
That’s what I’m trying to be honest about.
Sometimes it’s not about improving the house.
It’s about deciding what kind of life we’re building next.
And that question deserves more than a visit to a tile showroom.
If this resonates — for you or someone in your life — I’d love to hear where you’re at.
Reply to this email, or just reach out. No pitch, no pressure. Just a conversation worth having.
And if this sounds like someone you know who’s quietly weighing the same things — feel free to pass it along.
