At This Stage… I’m Designing Income, Not Just Updating a House
I’ve decided to start sharing these reflections publicly because I have a feeling many of us are thinking about the same things — just not always saying them out loud.
In 2018, our stove caught fire.
It wasn’t dramatic. But it was enough to call the fire department.
There wasn’t much damage — we’d actually renovated the kitchen back in 2007. It was fine. Functional. Just not quite where I wanted it anymore.
But that moment cracked something open.
I’d already had a vision. A separate entrance. A proper in-law suite in the lower level. Real rental income built right into the house — not as an afterthought, but as a plan.
The fire didn’t create that vision. It just made it impossible to keep sitting on.
So I hired an architect. A structural engineer. And what started as a stove fire turned into a full redesign — separating the upper and lower levels into two distinct living spaces.
One for us. One as income.
The lower level was designed as a proper one-bedroom apartment. Not “just a basement.” A real living space for someone.
The vision has always been this:
Live upstairs. Generate income downstairs. Use that income to help fund the rest of the renovations. Build a structure that supports itself over time. Create freedom inside the property itself.
And eventually — possibly rent both levels and move into a condo downtown with a view.
Not because we have to.
Because we can.
Because at this stage, I want options.
I’m 56. I want the next ten years to feel intentional.
So many people hesitate when they hear “living with others” or “rental income” or “restructuring the space.” It sounds complicated. It sounds like a lot.
But I see it differently.
It’s housing. It’s opportunity. It’s letting the property work for you instead of the other way around.
These aren’t impulsive ideas. They’re conversations I’ve been having slowly, carefully, honestly.
If you could redesign your home to support your next chapter — would you?
If this resonates — for you or someone in your life — I’d genuinely love to talk it through.
Whether you’re thinking about your own home, helping a parent figure out their next move, or just curious what something like this might look like financially — I’m always open to that conversation.
