New Mackenzie Health Hospital in the Plans for Vaughan

New hospital in Vaughan

New hospital in VaughanVaughan is one of the fastest growing and most desirable communities in Canada.

You’ve probably noticed lots of new housing being developed, along with proposed development plans like the condominiums near Vaughan Mills. And if you’ve been following my blog, you also know about the subway extension coming to Vaughan.

But did you know that a brand new hospital is in the works for Vaughan as well? Here’s what the project entails and what you should expect:

Mackenzie Health is planning for the development of a major regional health system. The project envisions one hospital corporation that will oversee two hospitals including the existing Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital and the future Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital.

The future Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital site is at Major Mackenzie Drive on the east side of Highway 400, west of Jane St (close to Canada’s Wonderland). These future health services will serve Richmond Hill, Thornhill, Vaughan, Markham and surrounding communities.

During the summer of 2011, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, Deb Matthews, announced the approval of a new hospital in Vaughan. With this, it was also confirmed that the new hospital has been added to Ontario’s infrastructure plan. It is estimated that construction will begin in the 2015/2016 fiscal year. From there, it is expected to take two to three years to build the hospital and the necessary infrastructure on the site of the new hospital.

Throughout their planning process, Mackenzie Health is continuously seeking input from key stakeholders including patients, community members, staff, physicians, community groups and health partners in order to bring necessary services to the Vaughan community. You can get involved by filling out their Community Consultation Survey online.

The two hospitals will be in close proximity to one another due to operational benefits such as quicker travel time from one site to the next for staff and physicians. The two-hospital model for health services promises an integrated health system for patients that will provide care closer to home and will work toward bringing the best available practices, the newest technologies and innovative models of care to the Vaughan community. York Regional growth and density projections for the next 40 plus years also show that these two sites are in the best location to best serve the Vaughan community.

Thanks to an $80 million contribution made by the City of Vaughan, the site was secured for the future hospital. There are five stages in the capital planning process, and the project is currently in Stage Two: Functional Program (see below).

Hopefully this post answered most of your questions, but if you want to learn more about Mackenzie Health, this project, and what proposed features the new hospital may have, take a look at the About Us – Future Development page. And if you’d like to see more aerial and street view photos of the future Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital site, check out the Vaughan Healthcare Centre Precinct Plan.

Along with the plans for a new subway line and city centre, the Mackenzie Hospital is helping to turn Vaughan into the new centre of activity north of Toronto.  What do you think about all of the changes coming to Vaughan?

I can’t imagine the traffic thats going to cause at Jane and major Mac. Especially in the summer time. The 400 is packed like the don valley parkway and homes are being built at a rapid pace. There is no infitstructure ( new roads or highways. ) we need a new east west highway north of the 407, going from 410 to the 404.
